Self-Guided Gallery Walk in San José

A good number of galleries are closed, or have greatly reduced operating hours, during the hottest months of the year, usually late June through September. If there is one gallery you are particularly interested in, it's worth calling ahead to check on hours.

The Thursday art walks start at 5 pm, with galleries open until 9 pm. Start your walk on Hidalgo and Obregón, and wander down Obregón through the six or so galleries scattered on the next two blocks. Turning left on to Guerrero, you'll want to stop in to see Galería de Ida Victoria and Casa Don Pablo. Turn right out of the galleries and walk a block over to Comonfort, where you'll connect to Morelos in another block to find the galleries in Casa Paulina awaiting, and the Frank Arnold Gallery a half block farther up on Comonfort. If you're hungry at this point, Voilà Bistro in Plaza Paulina and Baan Thai, across the street from each other on Morelos at Comonfort, are both excellent. Finish up by heading back to the zócalo and wandering among the shops on Plaza Mijares—making sure not to miss Sax and silvermoon.
