As many as six ships call at Cozumel on a busy day, tendering passengers to the downtown pier in the center of San Miguel or docking at the two international piers 6 km (4 miles) away. From the downtown pier you can walk into town or catch the ferry to Playa del Carmen; the international piers are close to many beaches, but you'll need a taxi to get into town. A four-hour island taxi tour (four people maximum), including the ruins and other sights, costs MX$990 to MX$1410—negotiate the price before setting off. There's rarely a wait for a taxi; however, prices are high, and drivers are often aggressive, asking double or triple the reasonable fare. When in doubt, ask to see the rate card required of all taxi drivers and always agree on the price before getting in the car. Drivers accept both U.S. dollars and pesos; tipping is not necessary but appreciated.
