Getting Here and Around

Because of the risks of overland travel through the state of Guerrero, it's best to make Acapulco a fly-in, fly-out destination or to arrive and depart by cruise ship.

Aeropuerto Internacional General Juan Álvarez (ACA) lies 26 km (16 miles) southeast of Acapulco. United Express flies from Houston December through April and is the only U.S. airline serving the airport with scheduled flights. Otherwise, you’ll have to connect to a domestic flight elsewhere in Mexico. Aeromexico, Interjet, and Volaris fly from Mexico City and a couple other hubs around the country.

Acapulco features as a port of call on select Panama Canal and Mexican Riviera cruises of Crystal, Hapag-Lloyd, Norwegian, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, and Silversea lines. Ships dock at the Terminal Maritima de Acapulco near downtown and the western end of the Avenida Costera Miguel Alemán.

Vast distances plus tropical heat equal a city that’s not very pedestrian-friendly. Beyond strolling the beach or crossing the Avenida Costera Miguel Alemán from hotel to ocean, few visitors do much walking here. If you do have to get to other areas of town, luckily taxis are plentiful enough that renting a car is probably not necessary. Taxis that cruise the streets usually charge by zone, with a minimum cost of $2. A ride from Acapulco Diamante to La Quebrada in Old Acapulco will run you about $20.
