Restrooms

Guatemalan restrooms—look for the "sanitarios" sign—use Western-style toilets; cleanliness standards are often low, especially in public facilities such as bus and gas stations. Despite this, you often have to pay a small fee (a quetzal or two) to use these toilets. Toilet paper is a rarity, so carry tissues with you. Antibacterial hand wipes are also useful. Guatemalan plumbing generally can't handle toilet paper; throw it in the basket by the toilet instead.
