San Marcos La Laguna

San Marcos has acquired fame as a center of New Age devotion, thanks to the presence of the Pirámides del Ka meditation center/lodge. The tiny village does cater mostly to tourists of all stripes, however, and even those whose vacation schedule is not "Yoga at 9, meditation at 10" will find their own bliss here. (San Marcos is home to a couple of our favorite Guatemalan hotels.) From the dock you can reach the center of the village by walking uphill along a narrow cobblestone path. The village itself has one or two stores and a restaurant around the central square. If you plan on staying in San Marcos, you should remember to bring a flashlight, as much of the town lacks electricity. Also, lodgings here can be difficult to contact by phone at times. Keep trying.
