Health and Safety

Las Verapaces doesn’t offer any particular security issues, but you should exercise reasonable caution. In Cobán take the same measures you would in any city: Be aware of your surroundings, don’t flash money or jewelry, keep an eye on your camera, bags, and other possessions, and avoid deserted areas. When hiking in remote zones, we recommend that you be accompanied by a guide. Finally, consult the CDC’s Health Information for International Travel, and speak to your own physician about the advisability of taking anti-malaria pills.
