Car

Driving in the southern reaches of the South Pacific can be rough, especially in rainy season. If you decide to drive, make sure your vehicle has 4WD, high clearance, and a spare tire. Give yourself lots of daylight time to get to where you’re going (the sun sets around 5:30). You can also fly to Golfito or the Osa Peninsula and rent a 4WD vehicle. The Southern Zone was the very last part of Costa Rica to be settled, and the first road from San José to San Isidro wasn't begun until the 1950s.
