Air

Aeropuerto Internacional Daniel Oduber Quirós (LIR) in Liberia is an international gateway to the coast, with a large, air-conditioned terminal. Tamarindo also has a small airstrip. Flying from San José is the best way to get here if you are already in the country. If your primary destination lies in Guanacaste, make sure you investigate the possibility of flying directly into Liberia instead of San José, which saves some serious hours on the road.

Many airlines have direct service between major U.S. hubs and Costa Rica's two international airports in San José and Liberia. SANSA, Aerobell, and Skyway have scheduled flights between San José, Liberia, and Tamarindo but often you need to go directly to the airline's website to schedule flights. Don't forget to factor in the exit tax, $29 by air and $7 by land, payable in U.S. dollars, colones, or credit card. Some airlines include this fee in the ticket price.
