Valle del Sol. If you can't make it out to one of the country's flashy Pacific golf courses, this public course makes a nice low-key alternative. Your fellow golfers will be well-to-do Costa Ricans and expats who call the western Central Valley—with its California-like climate—home. Valle del Sol mixes it up with a few difficult holes punctuating the straightforward ones. Holes 5, 7, 9, and the exceptionally challenging 10 (par 5) require you to navigate around and between ponds. The dress code calls for collared shirts and blouses, and denim shorts and jeans are prohibited. Nearly 2 km (1 mile) west of Davivienda bank, Santa Ana, San José, 10905. 2282–9222; www.vallesol.com. $69 for 18 holes.
