Costa Rica forms part of the Pacific Rim's so-called Ring of Fire. Throughout history, earthquakes have taken their toll on the country, especially the Central Valley. (Fortunately, Costa Rica enforces some of the world’s most stringent building codes to mitigate the impact of such disasters.) Guides and exhibits here give a basic Geology 101 lesson in Spanish and English and explain how an earthquake occurs and a volcano erupts. Other talks discuss earthquake preparedness, an issue that citizens of this tremor-prone region of the world take to heart. The real attraction is the Simulador, an earthquake simulator that mimics the 6.4-magnitude tremor that destroyed much of Cartago on May 4, 1910.
