    $$$

In Odessa's beautiful Philharmonic building, Bernardazzi's is an elegant restaurant and wine cellar with gorgeous art-deco interiors and a lovely courtyard terrace for summer lunching. The menu places a heavy emphasis on meats, with items ranging from New Zealand lamb to American rib eye steak. They also offer hors d’oeuvres with wine parings and a number of cold appetizers, including pike caviar on toast. Bernardazzi's prides itself on its huge wine list, and offers a huge selection of wines from around the world—Chilean, New Zealand, Israeli, and South African varietals are represented alongside wines from across Europe.

  • 2. Café Mishi Blyahera

    $$$$

Tucked away down a steep set of stairs, this quirky, vintage-style restaurant is as popular for its food as it is for its convivial, eclectic atmosphere. It was inspired by a notebook belonging to an unknown author by the name of Mishi Blyahera, which was full of recipes, many of which feature on the frequently changing menu. Expect a wide selection of salads, meat dishes, and sweet treats (think Belgian waffles with strawberries). The interiors of this cozy basement restaurant have the feeling of a vintage furniture shop, with mismatched chests of drawers, bookshelves stuffed with old tomes, and low-hung lamps.

  • 3. Fishcafe

    $$$

A chic lunch and dinner spot, Fishcafe has an extensive menu of modern European and fusion dishes (including plenty of fish, of course). Dishes come beautifully presented and include items such as Norwegian salmon steak in almond crumbs with caviar sauce, and honey-glazed pork belly trimmings paired with shrimp croquettes. In summer, guests can dine in a covered outdoor space with elegant dark-wood framed upholstered chairs.

  • 4. Milk Café

    $$

One of the trendier places to eat out in Kremenchug, Milk is a relaxed café that offers a large menu of pizzas, pastas, and meat and seafood dishes, along with espresso drinks and a wide range of beautifully presented desserts. Daytimes are popular with people working nearby, who come to take advantage of the 30 Hryvnia set lunches, while evenings—which often feature DJ sets—tend to draw in lingering crowds. Interiors are bright, with exposed-brick walls painted in bright hues and low-hanging ceiling lamps. There's also a covered terrace area for warm-weather dining.

  • 5. Restaurant Kremin

    $$

Inside the Hotel Kremin, this is a bright, faux-rustic restaurant serving Ukrainian and European dishes. There's more of a business vibe during the daylight hours, and the restaurant offers discounts on business lunches during the day. The evening scene is a bit more relaxed, and they even host rock 'n' roll parties on Friday evenings. Guests with special dietary needs can order custom dishes directly from the kitchen, without any need to call ahead of time.

  • 6. Restaurant Pantagruel

    $$

Inside the hotel of the same name, Pantagruel is a snug, casual spot serving Ukrainian mainstays and Italian classics. The interiors are done up in the rustic style typical of Ukrainian restaurants, with arched windows flanked with faux-exposed brick and wooden ceiling beams that give it a medieval ambiance. There's also a vine-covered garden courtyard for al fresco dining in the summertime. Those staying at the hotel get a 10 percent discount on meals.

  • 7. Restaurant Reporter

    $$$$

Spread over three stories in a historic building in central Dnepropetrovsk, Reporter is a one-stop-shop for visitors who want a night on the town without having to walk anywhere. The elegant (and pricey) restaurant serves classically chichi items such as veal carpaccio with foie gras and raspberry sauce, escargot, quail, and rabbit. There’s also a more casual eatery in the complex, with items such as veal burgers and even a vegan platter! The casual coffee shop on the ground floor doubles as a breakfast café, and serves a wide variety of heavy cakes and fluffy French pastries. The on-site movie theater is particularly popular with the primarily youngish, unabashedly hip, and generally well-to-do crowd that frequents the complex.

  • 8. The Loft Cascade

    $$$

Inspired by Manhattan loft-style dwellings, the Loft Cascade serves a wide and varied selection of pub food and barbecue dishes in an industrial-chic environment. Although the beer selection is a bit slim for a pub, the focus is really on the food, and guests can wash down burgers, sandwiches, pastas, and meat and seafood dishes, with a frothy Guinness or a refreshing Hoegaarden White. A selection of steak is also available—think Lamb steak with a Jack Daniel's marinade or imported American T-bone. There’s also a summer menu with a lighter selection and a kids' menu.

  • 9. Under Wonder Restaurant

    $$$

One of the newest additions to Kiev's culinary scene, Under Wonder has quickly established itself as one of the city's trendiest places to eat. The menu focuses heavily on Western European items—think veal carpaccio and foie gras—and traditional Ukrainian breakfasts of cottage cheese crepes are served in the morning. The interior features exposed brick walls painted cream, multicolored glass windows, and lush red velvet booth seating on the lower floor. Candles and potted plants add a touch of hominess.
