Taxi Travel

Provincial taxis are somewhat expensive; fares generally work out to about 4 TL for every 1 km (½ mile) traveled. It's best to take a taxi from an established taxi stand, where you see several lined up, since the drivers there will be regulars and if you should have a dispute or lose something, it is much easier to retrace the car. It's normal, however, to hail taxis in the street. For longer journeys, you may wish to settle a price in advance, but within city limits, the taxi driver should automatically switch on the meter when you get in. As elsewhere, if he doesn't, insist upon it.
