Fodor's Expert Review Sumahan on the Water

Kuleli Cad. 43, Istanbul, Istanbul, 34684, Turkey Fodor's Choice

What was once a derelict distillery on the Asian waterfront of the Bosphorus is now one of Istanbul's chicest and most original places to stay, with comfortable rooms and suites—all with incredible water views and all decorated in a contemporary style with a few Turkish touches. Most rooms have fireplaces, and ground-level loft suites open onto a communal grassy yard. There's also an attractive hammam and small fitness area. Breakfast is served on the waterfront patio in warm months. The hotel has a private launch that makes regular runs across the Bosphorus (complimentary, but reservations needed) to Kabataş and Kuruçeşme.

PROS

  • stunning waterfront location
  • stylish and inviting public areas
  • secluded, romantic atmosphere

CONS

  • far from sights and commercial center
  • somewhat inconvenient to get to without the free (for guests) private launch
  • not all rooms are wheelchair-accessible
