Ürgüp is especially known these days for its charming small hotels, many of which are in restored cave houses and have views overlooking the town and the nearby cliffs. Some beautiful old mansions that were formerly owned by prominent local families—including Greeks, who were a significant presence in the area until the 1923 Greek-Turkish population exchange—have also been converted into hotels.
Downtown Ürgüp is a somewhat tacky jumble of buildings built up mostly for the tourism industry, but you’ll find banks, ATMs, travel agencies, carpet and souvenir shops, and even a Turkish bath, along with a few low-key nightlife venues. During the winter months, a few hotels and restaurants in Ürgüp close, which means somewhat reduced options for travelers but a more tranquil atmosphere.
