Avanos

Avanos is a low-key town on the K?z?l?rmak (Red River), so named for the color of the clay that lines its banks, and is best known for its pottery made from this clay. A wobbly suspension footbridge crosses the river near the busy town square, and a couple of cafés are located on the waterfront (there are bridges for vehicles a short way up- and down-river). Artisans create designs inspired by Central Anatolian archaeological findings, particularly Hittite-style vessels and motifs; many also produce their own unique pieces, both functional and decorative. Pottery is a family affair, so in shops you’ll see younger family members decorating pieces as their fathers and grandfathers operate the kick wheel. Almost all local potters give free demonstrations that showcase traditional techniques.
