Getting Oriented

  • Luzern. This little big city offers a full cultural palette: wander through the medieval Old Town; shop at chic boutiques; take a boat cruise; and listen to a diva sing in Jean Nouvel's architectural wonder, the Kultur- und Kongresszentrum.
  • Around Luzern. Towering over Luzern, Mt. Pilatus is impressive, with a restaurant at the top. Take the "golden round-trip," which includes a bus from Luzern, a cable car trip to the top, a cogwheel train back down the other side, and a boat ride back to Luzern. Head south to Engelberg, where you can take the gondola up to the top of Mt. Titlis.
  • Urnersee. Hallowed by myths, the Urnersee is the southern leg of Lake Luzern. Weggis and Vitznau are the "Riviera" towns, sheltered by coves and beloved by the rich. Farther south, pay your respects to the historic Rütli Meadow; the picturesque Tell Chapel, just across the lake; and Altdorf, where Wilhelm Tell first became a legend.
