The Palais des Nations, 10 minutes north of the Gare Cornavin by tram, is the focal point of Geneva's humanitarian and diplomatic zone. Modern structures housing UN agencies dominate streets leading to it; embassies, 19th-century villas full of nongovernmental organizations, and museums surround them.

To get to this sector, take Tram No. 13 or No. 15 from the Gare Cornavin to the end of the line (Nations), and disembark onto the pedestrian Promenade des Nations. Towering over the 84 computer-managed water fountains is Swiss artist Daniel Berset's Broken Chair, a memorial to land-mine victims.
