Planning Your Time

Though the major sights themselves don't require too much time to visit, they are scattered throughout the region, so it takes a while to get to them. If you have only one or two days, try to take in one or more of the cities. Neuchâtel and Fribourg have very different characters, and a day can easily be spent walking around the city centers, visiting a few museums, and sampling restaurants.

If you aren't interested in museums, the cities could be combined with a trip to one of the smaller nearby towns. More time allows you to tour the area and take in its subtle differences. If you start at Fribourg, cut south to the castle at Gruyères, then circle northwest through the ancient town of Murten on your way to Neuchâtel.

From Neuchâtel, head south along the Route du Vignoble (Wine Route) to the château town of Grandson and on to Yverdon-les-Bains. It's also a good idea to spend some time pursuing the many sporting opportunities available each season. Summer is the perfect time to take a long trip on Lac de Neuchâtel or to enjoy a hike.
