An important and scenic trans-Swiss artery, the A12 expressway cuts from Bern to Lausanne, passing directly above Fribourg. A parallel route to the northwest extends the A1 between Zürich and Bern, connecting Bern to Murten, Payerne, and Lausanne.

The A5 expressway runs between Neuchâtel and Yverdon but passes through a lot of tunnels. If you have the time, take the national road for a more scenic view of the lakeshore. The charms of this varied region can be experienced easily by car, and there are scenic secondary highways throughout. Keep in mind that some towns, like Gruyères, are car-free or have pedestrian-only centers; in these cases, parking lots are easy to find.
