Hiking

Grindelwald is a hiker's paradise, both in summer and winter. Detailed maps of mountain trails are available at the tourist office.

Eiger Trail. The 6-km (3¾-mile) Eiger Trail extends from Alpiglen (near Grindelwald) to Eigergletscher (above Kleine Scheidegg). It abruptly climbs 2,300 vertical feet through cool copses of firs and spruce. Strategically placed benches offer a welcome breather or the perfect spot for lunch. Using only hand tools, the trail was built in 1997 in just 39 days. Moderate. grindelwald.ch/en/summer/product/track/36-eiger-trail-eigerletscher-alpiglen/.

GrindelwaldSports. Head into the mountains on a guided hike led by GrindelwaldSports. With a day or two's notice, you can set out with a local, trained guide who can talk terrain as you cross beneath those lofty peaks. The Grindelwald tourist office also sometimes organizes outings. The tourist office and GrindelwaldSports are both at Grindelwald's Sportszentrum on Dorfstrasse. Dorfstr. 103, Grindelwald, Bern, 3818. 033/8541280; www.grindelwaldsports.ch.
