Most of Stockholm's nightlife is scattered to two different areas of the city. Birger Jarlsgatan, Stureplan, and the city end of Kungsträdgården are more upscale and trendy, and thus more expensive. Be sure to go to Stureplan, a few blocks up from the waterfront on any given weekend night, and you'll see crowds of sophisticated people gathering around Svampen (the Mushroom), the meeting place for people getting ready to go out in this upscale area. To the south, in Södermalm, things are a bit wilder and more bohemian, but no less hip. It's a more relaxed, casual scene where you'll find all types rubbing shoulders in the lively bars and clubs.
Many establishments will post and enforce a minimum-age requirement, which could be anywhere from 18 to 30, depending on the clientele they wish to serve, and they may frown on jeans and sneakers. Anywhere, a safe bet is wearing black, Stockholm's hue of choice. Things wind down around 3 am. Wherever you end up, a night of barhopping in Stockholm (and all of Sweden) includes fresher air now, because smoking has been banned since 2005 in all bars, clubs, and restaurants.
This popular meeting place at the waterfront end of Kungsträdgården has fantastic 19th-century decor, including painted ceilings and elaborate chandeliers. Along with dining and drinking, the draws include roulette and major dancing after midnight. Food from the Operabaren restaurant next door is served until 1:30 am.
Named for a song by the 1990s band the Pixies, Debaser is the epicenter of Stockholm's rock music scene, Denim-clad legions come to shake their stuff at two locations on Södermalm. In summer, there's also an open-air summer nightclub at Slussen.
A concert venue, nightclub, and restaurant, Fasching is the best and most popular place for jazz and world music in town. International and local bands play here year-round.
This classic club, one of Stockholm's hottest night spots from the 1930s through the 1960s, stills holds major performances throughout the year, as well as themed events ranging from Rolling Stones nights to ballroom dancing.
This combination indoor theater, comedy club, and outdoor café comes with a spectacular view of the city. The crowd here leans toward over-30 hipsters.
Mosebacke Torg 1–3, Stockholm, Stockholm, 116 46, Sweden
Located under the Skanstull bridge, this hugely popular open-air club creates a festival atmosphere with multiple entertainment spaces during the summer (May to early September). In the colder months, the action moves indoors to the two-story nightclub Under Bron.
The basement bar of the popular Tranan restaurant at Odenplan is a fun place to party in semidarkness to anything from ambient music to hard rock. Lots of candles, magazines, and art are inside.
