Fodor's Expert Review Victory
Lilla Nyg. 5, Stockholm, 111 28, Sweden
History defines this hotel, which is inside an extremely atmospheric Gamla Stan building that dates from 1640. In the breakfast room you can see part of a medieval fortress wall, and, in the 1930s construction workers stumbled across Sweden's biggest silver treasure ever found, just beneath the hotel. The theme is nautical, with artifacts from the HMS Victory, as well as Swedish antiques. Each room is named after a 19th-century sea captain. The restaurant, Djuret ("the Animal"), is a temple to organic and wild local meat, and a hot ticket with locals.
