Málaga is the main rail terminus in the area, with 13 high-speed trains per day from Madrid (2 hours 30 minutes–3 hours, depending on the train). Málaga is also linked by high-speed train with Barcelona (6 daily, 5 hours 45 minutes–6 hours 35 minutes, depending on the train). Six daily trains also link Seville with Málaga in just under two hours.

High-speed AVE trains from Granada to Málaga began operation in late 2019 and have reduced the journey time to 50 minutes. Málaga's train station is a 15-minute walk from the city center, across the river.

RENFE connects Málaga, Torremolinos, and Fuengirola, stopping at the airport and all resorts along the way. The train leaves Málaga every 20 minutes 5:20 am–11:30 pm, and Fuengirola every 20 minutes 6:10 am–12:20 am. For the city center, get off at the last stop. A daily train connects Málaga and Ronda via the dramatic Chorro gorge (2 hours 30 minutes).
