For now, standard-speed RENFE trains connect Madrid to Bilbao, San Sebastián, and Logroño, though the much-anticipated AVE (expected to be completed in 2023) will soon make the trip much quicker. Once you've arrived, a car is the most convenient way to get around, but the regional company FEVE runs a delightful (if perpetually late) narrow-gauge train that winds through stunning landscapes. From San Sebastián, lines west to Bilbao (the Euskotren) and east to Hendaye, France, depart from Estación de Amara; most long-distance trains use RENFE’s Estación del Norte.
