Bus

International and domestic bus lines and the Ljubljana municipal bus service all operate conveniently from the city's main bus terminal, not far from the city center.

Private coach companies operate to and from Trieste in Italy and Zagreb in Croatia, as well as other European destinations farther afield. Domestic bus service is frequent from the capital to most Slovenian cities and towns. Outside of a car, the bus remains the only practical option to Bled and Bohinj and mountain destinations west and north of the capital. Except during peak travel periods, you can simply buy your ticket on the bus when you board. Otherwise, purchase tickets a day in advance. Many buses do not run on Sunday.

Hourly buses link Ljubljana to Bled, Bohinj, and Kranjska Gora. The resorts are linked by local buses; their frequency depends on the season. For schedules and fare information ask at a local tourist-information center. Six buses a day connect Kranjska Gora and Bovec during the summer via the jaw-dropping Vršič Pass, and there is one direct bus from Ljubljana to Bovec that takes a little over 4 hours.

Several buses a day connect Ljubljana to Koper and Piran, passing through Postojna and Divača on the way. There is also a daily service connecting the coastal towns to Trieste, Italy.

Within Ljubljana, the municipal bus network is extensive, and service is frequent during weekdays. Service continues but is less frequent on weekends and holidays. Buses on most lines stop running around 11 pm. To ride the bus you need an Urbana card, which can be purchased from any kiosk and is topped up using the green machines at bus stops. Simply swipe the card when you get on the bus and away you go.
