Fodor's Expert Review Pleterje Samostan

The Carthusian monks of Pleterje Samostan aim "to find God in silence and solitude." Therefore, you can't enter the monastery proper, but you are welcome to view the magnificent 15th-century Gothic church and to watch a fascinating audiovisual presentation (in English) about the way the monks live. The walled monastery is nestled in a lonely valley surrounded by woods. Once a week, the monks take a 45-minute walk around the perimeter of the complex. The route is marked with a blue circle and yellow cross, so you can follow the trail independently. A small shop sells rakija, honey, wine, and cheese made by the monks.
