Portorož is the most popular of Slovenia's seaside resorts. The name—Port of Roses—recalls the time, a hundred years ago, when it was an exclusive haunt for Austro-Hungarian aristocrats. Those days, however, are long gone. Portorož today definitely caters to the everyman. Here you'll find chockablock hotels, restaurants, bars, casinos, and nightclubs—all of the things you associate with a modern package-vacation destination.
Portorož is difficult to grasp at first. The central area is small, although hotels and resorts spread out in all directions along the coast and the surrounding hills. Most of the action takes place along a small stretch of seacoast. Here you'll find the public beaches (which charge a small fee to swim), a pool, and a string of shops and low-priced eateries.
