Fodor's Expert Review Scalloway Hotel

Main St., Scalloway, Shetland Islands, ZE1 0TR, Scotland Fodor's Choice

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Facing the harbor, this traditional stone lodging has fine views, especially at sunset. The owners have an eye for all that's distinct about the islands, so there are locally made furnishings in the guest rooms: Shetland sheepskins and woven throws dress the beds, the mattresses of which are stuffed with local fleece. The freshest steak, lamb, and shellfish are served in the highly regarded restaurant.

PROS

  • thoughtfully put together bedrooms
  • memorable meals from the restaurant
  • lots of local charm

CONS

  • can get booked up in advance
  • some noise from bar on weekends
  • chintzy decor
