Merchant City

Near the remnants of medieval Glasgow is the Merchant City, with some of the city's most important 18th-century buildings. Many of them, like the great mansions along Ingram Street, were built by tobacco merchants with profits from the tobacco trade. Today those palatial homes hold restaurants and designer stores; one especially grand example houses the Gallery of Modern Art. Many of Glasgow's young and upwardly mobile have made their home here, in converted buildings ranging from warehouses to the old Sheriff's Court. Shopping is expensive, but the area is worth visiting if you're seeking the youthful Glasgow style.
