Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) spent 50 years of his life at Yasnaya Polyana, where he was born, wrote his most significant works, undertook social experiments, and was buried. Here he freed his serfs and taught peasant children at a school that he opened, attempting to transfer his ideal of a perfect world of universal equality to reality. Disappointed with his way of life and nobleman status, he decided at the age of 82 to depart from home forever, venturing out shortly before his death in October 1910.
