Fodor's Expert Review Ossetinskiye Pirogi
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
Many of the ethnic groups scattered throughout Russia have culinary outposts in Moscow, and this relaxed cafeteria-style café is the territory of bakers of savory pies from the Caucasus republic of North Ossetia. Half a dozen varieties of these filling, doughy treats sit steaming on shelves behind the counter (varieties include those with spinach and cheese, ground beef, and cabbage). The food, which also includes fried pirozhki (filled pastries) and mayo-dressed salads, is not for those with sensitive stomachs—but it's a great value if you're famished. The friendly female cashiers speak no English but are happy to interpret your gestures in order to pack a tray with food. All offerings but the pies are prepackaged, making ordering to-go a cinch.
