When to Go

High Season: June through September is the busiest, hottest, and most expensive time to visit Portugal. While the north of the country remains cooler and quieter (except for a few days in August when Portuguese emigrants flood back to their town or village for its annual festival), Lisbon and the Algarve can be sweltering. Most Lisbon locals head south for the summer holidays.

Low Season: Winter in Portugal is growing in popularity due to the agreeable temperatures year-round and lower hotel prices. Off-season activities are still varied and plentiful, and while the beach may be off the menu, pleasant strolls and cozy evenings are definitely on it.

Shoulder Season: Spring and autumn are both stunning seasons in which to visit Portugal. In April and October you may be lucky enough to enjoy a bracing dip in the pool or sea. Almond and orange blossoms perfume the air, key regions are quieter, and room prices have not yet peaked.
