Faro

The Algarve’s provincial capital combines a smattering of history and ample leisure opportunities in one lively package. It is one of the few places in the region that has a year-round buzz, mainly thanks to the thousands of students who attend universities here. Dotted with historic monuments, Faro is positioned around a small marina where local fishermen and yacht owners keep their vessels. Wander deeper into the city and you will find an attractive shopping street with high-end chains and stores selling local handicrafts, plus a variety of restaurants and bars that remain open in all seasons. Faro is also a great base for exploring the Algarve. It isn’t slap-bang in the middle but does offer the best access in terms of public transport and roads to reach both ends of the province.
