Azeitão

The region around the small town of Azeitão, on the western side of the Serra da Arrábida, retains a disproportionately large number of fine manor houses and palaces. In earlier times, many of the country's noblemen maintained country estates here, deep in the heart of a wealthy wine-making region. Wines made here by the José Maria da Fonseca Company are some of the most popular in the country (and one of Portugal's major exports); the best known is the fortified dessert wine called Moscatel de Setúbal.
