Safety and Precautions

Porto is safe compared with many major European cities, even late at night. However, there are parts of the old town below the Sé and certain alleys on the outskirts of the Ribeira district that can become a bit seedy after dark. In general, though, the greatest danger is the odd pickpocket on public transportation—do keep an eye (and preferably a hand) on your belongings. There’s a special police station for tourists downtown.
