Fodor's Expert Review MUDE–Museu do Design e da Moda
Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.
The acronym MUDE means "to change" in Portuguese, and it's an apt one for this standout fashion and design museum whose opening was a key moment in the regeneration of downtown Lisbon from elegant but stuffy to youthful and forward thinking. Celebrating the connection between high fashion and grand design, it includes well over 1,000 fashion pieces from the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, and Yves Saint Laurent, while the world of artistic design is represented by furnishings and homeware pieces from iconic names such as Phillipe Starck and Masanori Umeda. The museum, housed in former bank headquarters, also hosts visiting exhibitions on varying themes from the worlds of couture and design. At this writing, the museum was closed for renovation but MUDE has rotating exhibitions in other locations.
