Hotels

The best accommodations in the Alentejo have long been the pousadas, hotels housed in historic properties like medieval convents or castles. Some of the finest pousadas in the country are in the Alentejo, including one in the old Lóios convent in Évora and another in the castle at Estremoz. But the pousadas’ reign has been challenged recently by a new crop of private luxury hotels. There are also a number of private guesthouses in the region. Look for signs that say "turismo rural" or "turismo de habitação." In summer, air-conditioning is absolutely necessary in Évora, where temperatures can soar to more than 44°C (110°F).
