Fodor's Expert Review Fortaleza de Peniche

Peniche Military Sight

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

The busy harbor of Peniche is watched over by this sprawling 16th-century fort. During Portugal's dictatorship, which ended in 1974, it was a prison for opponents of the regime, which is why the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom is set to open here in 2024. In the meantime you should be able to tour the former cells and take in temporary exhibits, as well as seeing a memorial inscribed with prisoners' names. There are also some beautiful views of the ocean from its towers.
