Abrantes

A stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets of Abrantes is a perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon, especially if it winds up at the hilltop castle dating from the 16th century. The views of the valley from the top are nothing short of breathtaking.

Abrantes became one of the country's most populous and prosperous towns during the 16th century, when the Tagus River was navigable all the way to the sea. With the coming of the railroad and the development of better roads, the town's commercial importance waned.
