Breitner House

Oosterpark 87-88, Amsterdam, North Holland 1092 AW, The Netherlands

Why We Like It

In a minimalism loving land, this over-the-top romantic refuge is a rare find.

Fodor's Expert Review

Overlooking pretty Oosterpark, a 19th-century former artists’ salon--famous Amsterdam artist Breitner once lived here--is now home to a former actress who has impeccably staged her art-adorned guest house to look like painting from the Romanticism movement, complete with original details like stucco ceilings and stained glass windows, making it the ideal setting for romantic breaks.

You Should Know In such an intimate setting, it’s hard to go incognito, so this probably isn’t the place to sneak in your secret lover.

Room

It’s all about exclusive luxury here, with only two suites, both of which feature stunning ornamental ceilings dripping with chandeliers, as well as fireplaces, plenty of fresh flowers, fruit and pastries and beds with romantic linen canopies. In addition to all that period charm, rooms also come equipped with modern amenities such as iPod docking stations, LCD TVs, and Nespresso coffee makers.

Tip The 785-square foot George Breitner suite offers park and garden views, with a striking floral wall painting, while the ground floor, the 775-square foot Isaac Israels Suite boasts its own private garden terrace with a pond and pretty fruit trees.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are sizable and well-appointed, with roomy bathtubs, walk-in showers, and Clarins amenities, as well as fluffy robes and slippers.

Lobby

Breitner House is more like a luxury home away from home than a hotel, so there isn’t really a lobby to speak of. Simply ring the doorbell and your hostess will greet you at the door.

Dining

There is no on-site restaurant, but a Continental-style breakfast (included) is cooked and served by the hostess and may include appetizing extras like shirred eggs, creamy yogurt with honey and fresh fruit, and Champagne.

Drinking

Aside from the mini bar in your room, there is no on-site bar area.

Restaurants

Jacobsz (8-minute walk), Watergraafmeer’s trendiest restaurant is set in a recently restored 17th-century courthouse with a homely feel and well-thought-out, accessibly-priced plates. For leisurely lunches or romantic Mediterranean-style dinners, seek out Elkaar (9-minute walk). A short stroll away, you’ll find Pompstation (14-minute walk), where seriously good steaks are served in a still-functioning water pumping station with 60-foot-high ceilings and early 20th-century architectural features (there’s live jazz on the weekends too).

Bars

Set in a former police station next to Oostpoort shopping center, artisan beer brewer Brouwerij Troost (6-minute walk) serves Double I.P.A, Smoked Porter, and Weizen along with beer-infused bar snacks that would be a crime to ignore. Meanwhile, Bar Bukowski (6-minute walk) combines a cool mid-century décor with a great range of local craft beers. If you’d like something a little stronger, head to Henry’s Bar next door.
