When to Go

May is a lovely time to visit coastal Montenegro, with temperatures running 14°C–22°C (56°F–72°F) but before the busiest crowds of summer. After that, temperatures rise to reach a peak in August with an average daily maximum of 29°C (84°F), although hotter temperatures aren't unusual. These are fine days for sun worshippers or anyone willing and able to laze under sunshades and admire the sparkle on the water, but if you want to explore the towns where sun glare bounces off the white stone, you may prefer to choose a different time of year (or at least plan your sightseeing for early in the days). By September, temperatures are cooling (17°C–26°C [62°F–78°F])—and the crowds in the most popular sights (notably Kotor) are thinning—while the sea is still as warm as in June or July (24°C [75°F]), so this is also a great time to visit. After this the season is properly over, and winter on the coast is a little bleak (temperatures in January run 5°C–12°C [40°F–53°F]) and many businesses shut down.
