Getting Oriented

Of the small diamond-shape stretch of mountainous terrain that makes up Montenegro, only the southwestern face is usually visited by tourists as is the coastal strip. The most charming sites of this stretch of 100 km (60 miles)—as the crow flies—are at the northern end, though because of the short distances involved, more adventurous visitors can use any of the towns along the coast as a base to visit the inland towns and mountains. The coastline borders Croatia at its northern end and Albania to the south. Onward travel to the better-known towns and islands of Croatia is easily arranged by public transport or hired car, and the less discovered beaches and ancient sites of Albania are also accessible by regular buses across Montenegro’s southern border. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites and legendary hospitality of Kosovo and Serbia are also only a bus journey away.
