Widely regarded as one of the best restaurants on the coast, Hotel Conte's gastronomic offerings are proof of the benefits of culinary education and growth. The team of chefs have spent time at some of the finest restaurants in Europe, honing their craft and embracing new culinary trends in real time, leading directly to the food on your plate. The terrace is gorgeous, and the four-course set menu is a bastion of excellence.
Believed to be the oldest restaurant in Kotor, this rustic eatery is one of the best places in town for lobster, mussels, and fresh fish, such as simple barbecued zubatac (dentex) drizzled with olive oil and served with a wedge of lemon. The candlelit dining room has exposed stone walls, a wood-beam ceiling hung with fishing equipment, and a big open fireplace. In summer, extra tables are set outside on the piazza.
Serving creative twists on local food, such as beetroot risotto with sheep cheese or tuna ceviche, this sophisticated restaurant occupies an old stone building with a glass-and-steel winter terrace extension. It's a five-minute walk along the coast from the Old Town. Expect funky modern furniture and chill-out music accompanying a hip and tasty menu.
The restaurant and bar housed in this 13th-century town house fuse ancient and modern, Montenegrin and international, in a setting dominated by a tree set within the main room, its branches spreading out across the ceiling. A light menu offers both Mediterranean and Asian dishes, and—a welcome opportunity for diners in Kotor who don't eat fish—some vegetarian and meat dishes. Try the popular chocolate soufflé from the dessert menu. It's a great option for breakfast too.
Grillhouses and butcher shops go hand-in-hand, making Marenda Grill House a perfectly placed spot just outside Kotor's Old Town. The meat is about as locally sourced as you're going to get, cooked to perfection in a down-to-earth setting. The interior is nothing to write home about it, but this is most definitely substance over style.
This spot makes a great case as Kotor's most romantic restaurant. Settled in another of the city's hidden squares, Pržun straddles the fine line between private and popular, serving excellent seafood in a most professional manner. One extra bonus is the availability of Fabrika Craft Beer, brewed down the road in Risan.
This small family-run restaurant has been specializing in seafood since 1967. Set on the mainland hillside overlooking the sea, Restaurant Drago has a large terrace at the front, wonderful ocean views, and perfect sight lines to the fairy-tale island hotel, Aman Sveti Stefan. The friendly staff are multilingual.
This rustic old mill on the Ljuta River, 7 km (4 miles) down the coastal road from Perast, dates back to 1670 and has been run by the current family for 40 years. The restaurant offers excellent food with an emphasis on fish (you can visit the restaurant's own trout ponds set in the attractive grounds). In summer, outdoor tables are set up along the river (which is more of a stream these days). Mooring is available for those arriving by boat.
