British driver's licenses are acceptable; Americans must have international licenses. Driving is on the left and, in spite of the relatively well signposted routes, challenging.

Car Rentals

Renting a car will allow you to visit more of Malta's attractions during a day. Prices for a compact manual vehicle are about €35 per day. Void of highways, Malta is traversed by country roads with speed limits ranging between 24 and 40 mph. Seatbelt laws are strictly enforced. There are numerous small and reliable rental companies in Malta but not all offer the option of airport drop-off. Avis, Budget, Europcar, and Hertz are all here.

Not all vehicles are new or low mileage. Always check the car for previous damage when you take possession at the start of your rental and record any existing damage officially with the rental office or on your mobile phone. Sidewalk curbs are high and can damage vehicles, so always be aware of the curb location when parking.
