Fodor's Expert Review Le Place d'Armes

Pl. d'Armes 18, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg City, 1136, Luxembourg Fodor's Choice

Simply the nicest-looking rooms in the city. This renovated 18th-century building was formerly seven separate properties, and if you’re lucky enough to bag a stay in the eaves, you’ll find original wooden beams latticed between the walls and angled roof, with mirrored window nooks carved between them gazing out over the inner courtyard and square. Distressed paintwork and golden headboards complete the effect, eliciting a fairy-tale air. Downstairs, the overall aura of moneyed elegance continues with the Michelin-starred La Crystallerie restaurant, its stained-glass windows and acclaimed wine cellar backing up one of the better menus in town. Lunch in Café de Paris is far more laid-back, though the wine selection is still a serious beast.

PROS

  • guests have access to a digital magazine subscription
  • you’re in the shopping heart of the city
  • the rooms really are something special

CONS

  • the square outside can be noisy for overlooking rooms
  • no pool or wellness facilities
  • none of it comes cheap
