Fodor's Expert Review Hôtel Français

Pl. d'Armes 14, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg City, 1136, Luxembourg

Set in an enviable location in the city, on the historic place d’Armes, this small, smart boutique stay offers decent value for its prestigious setting. The same owners also run the larger, more modern “gallery hotel” Simoncini, near Place Guillaume, though this is the better placed of the two. Rooms sit above the excellent 19th-century Café Français, one of the oldest eateries in Luxembourg, and a fine spot to savor a light lunch while gazing on a square once dubbed “the living room of the city.” Rooms upstairs are more frugal and business-like in their design than the artwork scattering the public spaces, but it's a great base for shoppers.

PROS

  • family-owned stay with lots of character and history
  • free use of a public computer and printer
  • central stay with a sumptuous café-restaurant

CONS

  • rooms on the square can be noisy
  • there's no parking in this part of the city
  • there are few to no facilities
