Why We Like It

The service at Locanda Orseolo is second to none, the San Marco location is a dream, and it has character and charm for days.

Fodor's Expert Review

Yes, the location is wonderful (in a restored 1000-year-old Venetian home very close to Piazza San Marco, but on a quiet canal), and yes, the breakfasts are yummy (with made-to-order eggs and crepes), but what really makes this guesthouse special is the amazing staff. Not only will they happily provide guests with recommendations for hidden places throughout Venice (and reserve tables and tickets for them), but they make a point to remember every guest’s name.

You Should Know There’s no elevator in the hotel, so if you don’t do well with stairs, this may not be your best pick.

Room

The 12 cozy guest rooms have a Carnevale theme, done up in bright colors with murals painted on the walls, chandeliers, and hardwood floors. Some rooms have views over the Orseolo canal, while those in the back overlook the quiet courtyard.

Tip Canal view rooms can be a bit noisy in the early mornings, so opt for a courtyard view if you’d like to sleep in.

Bathroom

Bathrooms in the Standard rooms and Superior rooms with canal view are tiled and come with showers, while those in the Superior rooms with courtyard view have combo bathtub/showers.

Lobby

While richly decorated and charming, the lobby is basically just a check-in desk. But the beautiful sitting room, decorated with elegant carpets and Venetian paintings, is a great place to meet other guests.

Dining

While Locanda Orseolo doesn’t serve lunch or dinner, the breakfast spread is a true delight, with both an extensive buffet as well as items made to order. It’s served in an evocative room with beamed ceilings, red leather-and-wood chairs, and leaded glass windows.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The beauty of staying at Locanda Orseolo is that you can pretty much walk anywhere in Venice, especially since you have San Marco at your fingertips. Alternately, the San Marco vaporetto stops are only a 5-minute walk away, from where you can sail to your heart’s content.

Restaurants

Osteria Enoteca San Marco (2-minute walk) is an elegant and contemporary Italian bistro with a fine selection of wines, while Ai Mercanti (2-minute walk) is a haven for inventive dishes at a reasonable price. For a splurge (though reviews can be mixed), the refined Italian cuisine at Michelin-starred Ristorante Quadri (2-minute walk), smack in the middle of Piazza San Marco, deserves a stop.

Bars

Enjoy wonderful Piazza San Marco views at Caffè Florian (3-minute walk), or try a Bellini cocktail at the place it was invented, Harry’s Bar (4-minute walk). For some cicchetti (bar snacks) and wine, Enoteca al Volto (5-minute walk) is a great place to hang out a while.
