When to Go

This part of the Mediterranean is at its best in spring and fall, though you may encounter hordes of schoolchildren at archaeological sites. The weather is often chilly in winter, and roads on the upper slopes of Vesuvius can become dangerously icy. Spectacular summertime events take place at the ancient Roman baths at Baia and the ancient Roman theater at Pompeii. The verdant Campi Flegrei becomes a floral feast at springtime, and as late as June and July the north-facing slopes of Vesuvius remain awash with color.
