Tharros

Spread across a thin tongue of land that dangles off the Sinis Peninsula, the archaeological site of Tharros ranks as one of Sardinia’s most important Phoenician, Carthaginian, and Roman settlements. It’s not hard to understand why this evocative site was selected by the ancients, given its sweeping views across the Gulf of Oristano, its defensibility, and the shelter it provides vessels. Founded around 800 BC, the city was finally abandoned in the 11th century AD, in favor of Oristano.
