Castelsardo Travel Guide

The seaside citadel of Castelsardo is surmounted by an impressive fortress, which now contains a museum highlighting the basketware for which the town is famous. Wandering the upper town's maze of steep alleys is a delight, as is browsing the numerous shops in the lower town. Good souvenirs include not only woven baskets but also rugs and wrought-iron items. On the road into Castelsardo from the east, note the Roccia dell'Elefante (Elephant Rock), which was hollowed out by primitive man to be used as a burial chamber. The local name for this type of structure is domus de janas (literally, "fairy house").
